Ramayana and Ethics: The vision we offer our children shape their future

India is a land of cultural pride and its social fabric has been integrated with morals, ideals and ethics. Our social practices, festivals and rituals, have highlighted the value of righteousness, community love and the right code of conduct. We had just celebrated one of the most auspicious festivals known as Ram Navami. It is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Rama in Ayodhya to queen Kaushalya and king Dasharath. Lord Rama is renowned for his virtue of righteousness and ethical behaviour. The entire life saga of Lord Rama has been written in the great epic Ramayana by Valmiki.

Ramayana is considered a remarkable resource for understanding the core values of ethics and guiding mankind to live for the greater good of society.

There is no other source better than Ramayana to teach and inculcate the values, morals and ethics in your fast-learning child.

As rightly said by Carl Sagan,

“The vision we offer our children shape their future”.

Being ethical in a favourable condition is always an easy choice but being rightful and doing justice when the condition is not in our favour is where being ethical could be complicated. Ramayana has several examples of dealing with the complexity of ethics and justice. Every character in Ramayana has something to teach and contribute to great character building for our young ones.

Here we are giving you a glimpse of few ethical learnings from the great epic Ramayana:

  1. Value of commitments: Lord Rama has shown us how important it is to uphold commitments. He chose to live 14 years in exile without any kind of luxury when he could simply deny the commitment of his A leader should always speak, what his actions could follow. A man without the value of commitments could not be a great leader or a person in society.
  2. The virtue of equality: Lord Rama was the highly regarded son of Dasaratha and of course a prince of the royal Even after belonging to a high social hierarchy, he broke the social tabu of caste barriers and happily accepted the tasted berries offered by Shabri, a shudra lady. He showed by his generous action that the religion of humanity is above all the chains of the caste system.
  3. Beware of temptations: When Ravan planned to abduct Sita, he asked his uncle Marich to become a golden stag and lure the pure-hearted Sita. After watching the beauty of the golden stag Sita got fascinated and asked lord Rama to fetch the golden stag for That’s when Rama went after the stag and Ravan became successful in abducting Sita. This event from Ramayana teaches us that we should be really careful about the things which tempt us. A careful decision might save us from an upcoming disaster.
  4. Importance of family: The whole Ramayana is evidence of pure love for If Rama didn’t love and respect his father he would have escaped the sufferings of 14 years exile by just disrespecting the words of his father. Rama chose the affection and respect of his father over his comforts and luxuries.

On the other hand, his wife Sita and brother Lakshman have also shown exemplary family bonding by not leaving Rama’s side and accompanying him in the entire 14 years of exile. Ramayana is an incredible story of winning of truth, justice and ethics over the evil in society. It is a great source of inspiration and guidance for our little ones. We must let our younger ones imbibe the morals and ethics from their cultural roots, and Ramayana is the ultimate source for it.
