Preschool and its advantages on a toddler

A preschool is a space that offers education to children still in their early childhood from the ages of 3 to 5. It allows them to interact with other children before their mandatory primary education begins.

When parents think of a preschool, not all are convinced that it’s something toddlers really need for their development. Some are of the opinion that it could cause early separation issues and not be of any real value to a child’s growth as in a year’s time, children will mandatory be enrolled in a nursery school.

The truth is, preschool is an institution specifically designed to benefit young children and better prepare them for a more structured school environment. A child can gain a lot from attending a preschool or even a daycare school as the curricula are created to help them understand the things they are exposed to daily – numbers, letters, shapes, colors – but the most important skills they learn are social and emotional.

According to statistics by the National Institute of Early Education Research (NIEER), ‘more than two-thirds of 4-year-olds and more than 40 percent of 3-year-olds were enrolled in a preschool program in 2005.’ The director of NIEER, W. Steven Barnett, Ph.D., says – Children who attend high-quality preschools enter kindergarten with better pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not.

These skills not only benefit children in their future but they also cultivate a child’s personality. a Here are a few advantages a preschool has for a toddler:

  1. Provides a solid, early foundation – Younger children, especially toddlers, are naturally inquisitive and very observant, so they are easier to mold. Which makes teaching them languages, numbers, colors, etc. at that age a perfect time for developing their fertile minds. A child that attends preschool is exposed to various social and academic teachings. Preschool teachers, to help children develop their interests and personalities, teach these skills through a variety of intuitive games and engaging activities.
  2. Prepares children for school – As things progress, even nursery schools become more academically advanced. It’s this very reason that parents consider sending children to preschool. And thankfully, high-quality preschools will not only prepare a child for nursery and further studies while still allowing them to enjoy their childhood and be themselves.
  3. Promotes emotional development – To survive in the world, emotional intelligence is incredibly important. However, to learn that, a child needs to feel safe and cared for. Preschool allows a child to spend some time away from family and build relationships outside of their homes. Teachers of high-quality preschools work to understand the individual needs of a child and figure out every child’s reaction to various problems/challenges. While teachers often offer the children solutions, they also encourage them to find their own and comprehend how their behavior affects others around, thus promoting a child’s emotional development.
  4. Children are taught to make calculated choices – Most preschool teachers focus on children’s interests. They are given several different choices of activities and are encouraged to choose one that particularly piques their interest. This gives children the reassurance that their choices and likes/dislikes are important and they sometimes have options.
  5. Children learn empathy – Preschool also teaches children competence and self-worth. They are allowed to ‘contribute to the community’, i.e. their preschool classroom, by undertaking different tasks like feeding the class pet, handing out activity sheets, etc. They are taught to do things for themselves such as being expected to wash their hands before a meal, putting their belongings in specific places, put toys away after playtime, and more. More importantly, they are taught to respect the emotions of others; for example, if the teacher asks the class to sit in a circle and talk about a topic then children are taught to pay attention to the teacher, listen to others, and wait their turn without interrupting.
  6. Nurtures language and cognitive development – Between the ages of 3 to 5, a child’s vocabulary grows significantly and they begin to comprehend and speak complex sentences. Preschool teachers help children enhance their language skills through thought-provoking activities and discussions and by introducing new terms and words throughout the day. Children learn various language skills through songs, read-aloud sessions, etc. They are also taught cognitive skills through observation activities, problem-solving, and tests. Most preschools also encourage parents to help their children further develop these skills with continued/extended activities they can do at home with them.
  7. Curiosity is encouraged – When preschool teachers ask questions to test a child’s knowledge, the goal is not to obtain a correct or apt answer but rather to nurture a child’s natural curiosity. Through this, children are motivated to learn. Their own curiosity is further nurtured through activities that cater to their interests and imaginations.
  8. Thoughtfully prepare children for further the future – Children see their parents and other adults paying for groceries, calculating bills, interacting with a variety of people for a variety of reasons. This instills a need to be just as competent and contribute to society (subconsciously). Their abilities to interact with adults are primed and honed in a preschool environment through activities and games. These are specifically intended to help them with further academics such as math, literacy, science, etc.

Preschools are an important part of every toddler’s life and greatly benefit their overall growth and development – mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally.
