IMPORTANCE OF UPDATING TEACHING STYLES
Technological advancement over the past few years has led to globalization of the world. However, when we talk about “Technological Advancement” it is not only restricted to new and updated versions of gadgets. An advancement in a nation or culture, leads to breaking the barriers, quality of life for its citizens and also giving birth to several educational fields and methods. In this world of virtual culture, our next generation or the GenZ is the real backbone of any country. Thus, focusing on them and their education especially becomes the prime responsibility. The teaching methods that resonate with them might be different than the conventional ones and thus our teachers also should be prepared to update themselves and their teaching styles accordingly.
Teachers are the ones who play a huge role in shaping young minds and directing them towards the right path. In these changing times, the ancient “Chalk Talk” method is very outdated and impractical. Which is why, it is important for educators to have an open mind and constantly make efforts to update their teaching methods with time. Here in this article, we will be focusing on why it is important for teachers to keep flexible teaching styles.
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO CONSTANTLY CHANGE MY TEACHING PATTERN AS A TEACHER?
As a teacher, sticking to one teaching method doesn’t always help and might also get monotonous for students. Thus, keeping yourself updated and preparing lesson plans accordingly impacts a child’s learning and quality of education, heavily. Below we have listed some of the benefits for the same.
DIVERGENT THINKING:
Flexible teaching styles often lead students to think divergently. When there is a steady shift in teaching styles, it gives the student a space to think not just one solution for a problem but many different solutions as it gives them a broader perspective towards every concept. Having the same methods to teach every topic/concept might restrict a child to always be inside the box which can hamper their thinking pattern since you condition their brain with the same style chosen to teach repeatedly. Changes in teaching patterns are also important as it often pushes students to produce innovative ideas.
CLASSROOM ENGAGEMENT:
Classroom engagement observes an instant boost when each topic is taught differently. We certainly cannot force students to engage in class when they do not feel like or if they find it boring. Hence, when you keep your lesson plans fun, interactive and interesting, you would not have to worry about students not participating. Instead, they will do it willingly and that will help them better understand concepts. Making sure that there is enough participation and efforts from the student’s side requires instructors to keep their teaching instructions flexible as and when necessary.
STRONG CONNECTION:
Believe it or not, when your way of teaching and instructing is unique, it will also create a space for students to connect with you on personal levels as well. A connection outside the classroom is a very important student teacher relationship. Your way of teaching and behaving will assure a child that they can rely on you if they get into some difficulty. It will help students to know that there is a safe space between you and them that they can use.
PRACTICAL APPROACH:
Most of the theoretical or even practical lessons for that matter are learned in schools, taught by our teachers. Thus, one of the other benefits of change in teaching patterns is that it will let students understand, learn and push them to think analytically and practically rather than struggling to apply bookish knowledge in the real world.
Below we will be mentioning a few tips to help you recognize how and when you should change your teaching styles according to changing scenarios.
CONSTANT FEEDBACK:
Taking feedback from students is really important every now and then. As a teacher, you should be aware if they are able to adapt with your teaching methods or if there is something that requires change. Taking feedback from children as well as parents, will give you as an instructor a clear idea of how to plan your lessons.
Teachers at MADE EASY School take student and parent feedback very seriously and consider tweaking their teaching methods as and when the need arises.
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE:
Every child is gifted and unique in many different ways. Each student varies in their grasping speed and understanding concepts. Thus, as a teacher it should be your responsibility to find a middle ground between you and all the students and make necessary changes to modify your method which is not too difficult nor too easy.
INCLUDE TECHNOLOGY:
Kids get easily attracted to gadgets and thus it should be used as an advantage. Have video lectures, show cartoons to explain topics. This will make studying really fun and engaging and will make students want to participate voluntarily in group discussions.
You don’t repeat your moves when you play a game of chess, do you? Similarly, having the same teaching style has not proved to be of much benefit. Rather it affects the development and thinking patterns of students and stops their growth. Thus, as teachers it is advisable to stay updated with changing times so that they can help kids stay connected and hooked towards education.
