HOW TO CELEBRATE HOLI SAFELY DURING COVID TIMES

Holi – The festival of colours! It is that time of the year we all desperately keep waiting for. We Celebrate Holi to mark the victory of good over evil. Everyone looks forward to this day as it starts the beginning of spring season in India. People all over the nation enjoy this festival without any barriers of religion, caste or creed and the sky is filled with vibrant colours. This festival of colours is undoubtedly the most cherished and special among kids and parents alike.

However, the major concern for parents is, whether they should allow their child to play Holi this year in the rise of a global pandemic.

Let’s not run from the fact that covid cases have been rising immensely with every passing day. People are being infected more and more all over the world leading to serious damage to them and their families. The current statistics show more than 40,000 cases being reported in a day, every day, leading India to top the list of worst affected countries. It has become nearly impossible to get a hold of this virus and control it from spreading even after the vaccine distribution done by the government.

So, should I restrict my child from playing Holi this year?

According to the doctors and government guidelines, the infection is being silently transmitted from one person to another, it is advisable to stay away from larger crowds as the risk of contracting the virus is higher and can put your child in some serious danger. Here are some of the things you can do “At home” during Holi with your child to keep up the festive spirit without it being boring.

TELL THEM THE STORY OF HOLIKA DAHAN:

The story of holika dahan is something every child should know about. Children love to listen to stories and this can be a perfect opportunity to educate them about why exactly is Holi celebrated and the importance of this festival.

RAINBOW IN MY PLATE:

Who said we can play with colours only outdoors? All you need is water and a pack of M&M or Cadbury Gems! This is a very fun experiment to do with your child at home and create a rainbow of colours. It is definitely as interesting as it sounds.

MAKE HOLI SWEETS:

Kids always love sweets but the process of making them is far more interesting and engaging. Make some really tasty sweets with your child and teach them how they are made! These kinds of activities are considered to be helpful in family bonding experiences.

Indoor activities would really help you bond with your child this year as it is very important to stay inside our houses and be safe.

However, we do understand how early experiences are important for a child. Thus if you consider playing holi this year, here’s the list of Do’s and Don’ts to follow which will help you make the festival enjoyable as well as safe this year.

DO’s:

  • KEEP A CHECK: Make sure that the people you or your child is playing holi with doesn’t show any symptoms of the deadly virus such as cough, cold, fever etc thus it is advisable to keep a check on your fellow friends playing holi with you.
  • WEAR MASKS: Make sure you cover your face with a mask constantly to avoid getting infected as the virus is proved to be easily transmittable through respiratory droplets and contact routes.
  • PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING: It might sound a little impossible to maintain distance while playing holi but one should at least try to not come in close contact with a lot of people and try to keep safe distance from every individual.
  • PROTECT YOUR EYES: It is very important to give a pair of sunglasses to your child while playing Holi as even a hint of colour or water pressure might damage their eyes.

DON’Ts

  1. AVOID GROUPS: Make sure you avoid being a part of large groups (more than 6 people) as it has a lot of probability for a person being asymptomatic to the virus.
  2. AVOID UNKNOWN SURFACES: The virus can be contracted from anywhere and everywhere and even non-living surfaces thus one should take proper care to avoid touching unknown surfaces.
  3. AVOID CHEMICAL BASED COLOURS: The major risk that Holi brings along is exposure to harmful chemical / synthetic colours. It is advised to use organic colours specially with kids as to save them from harmful skin diseases. Parents should take proper care and provide their ward with organic colours or flowers.
  4. AVOID WATER WASTAGE: It is very important to respect our natural resources and thus be a little responsible and make minimum usage of water and try to celebrate a dry Holi. Children should be taught to do the same.

Holi is about having fun and we wish you a happy and safe Holi with your loved ones. Make sure you make the best out of it with your kids and have a blast.
