EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING vs CONCEPTUAL LEARNING
As a preschooler it might get a little difficult and confusing for your child to grasp real world concepts, especially when parents are not aware of what is the right method to help them learn in a simpler and effective way. Here in this article we will be discussing some easy models of learning which are less stressful and more fun.
WHAT IS LEARNING?
In simple terms, Learning can be defined as the operation of input, process and reflection. To elaborate more on this, it is a process where we take in some new information, process it with the existing information / experiences and then reflect it into our behaviour.
Here we will be discussing two important and helpful methods of learning to make your job as a parent easier.
(1) EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
(2) CONCEPTUAL LEARNING
WHAT IS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING?
“Knowledge results from the combination of grasping experiences and transforming it” – Prof D.A Kolb
Experiential Learning is a method of learning through one’s own experiences. It is “learning by doing.” According to research, 70% of what we know comes from experiences and trying new things. However, the main aspect of experiential learning is when one reflects on those experiences. For example: Baking a cake! When one makes an attempt to bake a cake he / she might end up making at least one mistake. But the next time you do it, you will not repeat the same mistake because of your past experience. In and all experiential learning is all about Trial and error.
BENEFITS OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING:
- Initiates Creativity: One problem has many different solutions. Experiential learning provides an opportunity to your child to find more than one and creative solutions to a problem.
- Practicality: Since experiential learning is all about experiences, it focuses more on actually solving a problem practically and not just reading about it theoretically.
- Memory Retention: Children gain a deeper understanding of content when allowed to experience it in real life as it stays with them a little longer than usual.
- Life skill development: Experiential Learning helps develop a child’s problem solving skills better and will also benefit their future growth and learning.
Thus, experiential learning is the most effective model of learning in today’s education system especially when you have to shape young preschool minds.
WHAT IS CONCEPTUAL LEARNING?
In layman’s term conceptual learning is a process by which students learn how to organize information in logical mental structures. ie. making one capable of classifying objects/events by showing a set of examples for the same. For Example: associating sounds with animal names helps a child to distinguish / categories between different animals.
BENEFITS OF CONCEPTUAL LEARNING:
- Encourage understanding: Conceptual learning will actually encourage “understanding a concept” rather than just knowing the facts of a topic.
- Encourages critical thinking: If a child learns to understand a concept, it will help them solve problems logically and allow them to gain a “bigger picture” of a situation.
- Makes learning easier: Understanding concepts makes it easier and less confusing for a child to process information.
- Encourages active participation: Achieving conceptual understanding requires active engagement on the part of the learner, and this builds the ability to think from first principles.
Hence, these two methods are very effective and advisable to put in action to help your child learn and not expose them towards “rote learning.”
