Help your child explore the world outside of smartphones
We live in a world full of technology. For many of us, our children happen to understand it more than we do. However, the influence of technology or to be more specific, “smartphones” have been found to be the highest amongst preschool kids. According to some surveys, 25% of kids under the age of six now have smartphones. In some cases, parents are rather forced to hand them a phone, especially in the current scenario where online learning has become the only way out because of the pandemic.
There have been proofs of smartphone addiction which leads to certain serious mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
Providing smartphones to preschool kids can’t do much good but can surely make things worse. Some of the cons are as follows:
1) CYBERBULLYING: Children, when not being taught the correct and ethical use of smartphones can fall prey to cyberbullying as they are very easy to get manipulated at this tender age. Parents / Guardians cannot be around their child 24×7 and keep a check on what the child is supposed to watch/do with a smartphone.
2) DISRUPTED SLEEP: Smartphones can easily attract kids as it is enjoyable and easily accessible and can make them get addicted which eventually interrupts their development and their sleep cycle. It can also lead to unsatisfactory academic performance and a decrease in the creative abilities of the child. Prolonged smartphone usage also has an adverse effect on their eyesight
3) TUMOURS: Research suggests that excessive use of cellphones can lead to brain tumors due to the harmful radiation that they emit.
It is very important as a parent to limit your child’s screen time and also monitor what they are watching and the kind of content that they are consuming while accessing a smartphone. It is also advisable that apart from the absolutely necessary usage parents avoid their child’s exposure to technology as much as they can. The following can be some solutions for the same:
- ENCOURAGE PLAYTIME: It is crucial for a child to go outdoors and explore the world to stay mentally and physically fit. Outdoor playtime also gives children the required exposure to sunlight. Playing with other children in an outdoor setting also aids in their social development. Thus, it is important as a parent to encourage outdoor activities and keep their children productive throughout the day.
- ENGAGING into CREATIVE ACTIVITIES: Since childhood is supposed to be a “Creative Age” where children are carefree and have all the time in the world to explore different hobbies and interests, it is preferred to engage your child in some sort of creative activity such as dance, art, music and help them explore and experience different forms of art.
- SPEND TIME WITH YOUR CHILD: As most parents lead a busy life it can be hard for them to bond with their child but it is very crucial to spare some time out for their children and have a good healthy conversation with them. Kids often feel a void at a younger age and go out to seek attention and acceptance. It is important for parents to provide their children with warmth and free space to talk about anything they want to. Quality time is the best gift you can give your children.
Thus, it is important to minimize the use of smartphones amongst kids before they become a slave to it. Technology can do wonders if provided at the right age with proper guidance.
